The Merging Worlds of Technology and Cars

The line between the technology and automotive industries is blurring. The rise of rideshare companies such as Uber and Lyft means that transportation is being tied ever more closely to your cell phone, while autonomous driving technology is turning your car into a computer. But these developments are expensive: Carmakers’ R&D budgets jumped 61 percent, to $137 billion from 2010 to 2014.

Elon Musk’s Future: Robot Cars, People on Mars and AI Run Amok

SpaceX and Tesla Motors Inc. founder Elon Musk has never been shy about making bold predictions. His latest pronouncements: that most cars won’t have drivers in three years and people will arrive on Mars by 2025. 6. Apple Car Unlikely to See Showroom Floor, Edison's Windsor Says

Apple Inc. will never introduce a branded, self-driving car, according to Richard Windsor, an analyst at Edison Investment Research, because it would never be as profitable as the company’s gadgets now are. Selling automobiles would be “catastrophic” for Apple’s valuation, Windsor said, as the margins are nowhere near the 40 percent gross profit margins Apple earns on the iPhones, iPads and other products.

Driverless Tech Could Mean Faster Auto Races

David Belo trained as a mechanical engineer and he’s worked on cars for most of his career. He’s not a typical gearhead, though. He’s also studied computer science and physics, and his specialty is in the field of simulation: figuring out how to virtually reproduce the real world, in all its complexity and unpredictability, with enough realism that drivers can practice split-second decisions and engineers can test precision parts under high stress.

      Can Automakers Fulfill Their E-mission?

The Environmental Protection Agency and the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration want the average fuel economy for vehicles in the U.S. to be around 40 miles per gallon in real-world conditions by 2025. To eventually meet the 2025 standards, automakers will have to embrace a mix of increased electrification and other existing fuel-saving technologies. They also will have to invest more money in research and development,

Ten Modern Car 'Inventions' You Thought Were New but Are Not

After checking out everything luxury at the Detroit Auto Show last week, I spent some time at General Motor’s Heritage Center. The complex is about 30 miles from downtown Detroit and houses 15,000 linear feet of old paper archives (that’s a dozen Empire State Buildings stacked on top of each other); plus, the multiple warehouses there hold more than 400 cars made at one time or another over GM’s 100-year history.
